According to media reports, the two sides will discuss a plan to end the four-year war in Syria.
Other senior diplomats will attend the meeting to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict, which has cost hundreds of thousands of lives and left millions displaced. According to officials involved with the talks, possible partners for the plan include Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.
Kerry and Zarif are also expected to discuss the implementation of the nuclear agreement reached between Iran, the United States and five other world states.
The Kerry-Zarif meeting comes after the top US negotiator for the Iranian nuclear deal said Friday that the Obama administration was ready to open a dialogue with Iran about the situation in Syria. Iran, however, is still doubtful about US intentions in implementation of the nuclear deal, which is considered as a precondition for Tehran to work on any other topic including Syria, as emphasized by Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. While in New York to attend UN General Assembly Summit, President Rouhani had also highlghted that implementation of the deal was a test for honesty and cooperation of the US.
